In a lightweight and compact body, the Sony PXW FX6 has an impressive ISO and dynamic range full frame sensor
Sensor
ISO sensitivity
Capture usable images in near total darkness with an impressive ISO expanded range up to 409600.
Fast readout speeds and a dynamic range of 15+ stops deliver superb image quality with wide sensitivity and reduced noise.
Bokeh
Realise beautiful 4K imagery with the creative freedom made possible by a full-frame sensor.
Capture every detail from the scene with shallow depth of field and stunning bokeh for a truly cinematic look.
Colours
S-Cinetone look produce rich colour and natural skin tones, it produces fresh and vivid images straight out of camera without grading, while retaining plenty of latitude for post production.
Dynamic range
At its base sensitivity of ISO800, the FX6 offers optimal dynamic range for well-lit interiors and outdoor documentary shooting.
An enhanced ISO 12800 sensitivity is designed for challenging low-light, morning and evening shots.
Recording
10-bit 4:2:2 recording
Record right on the camera with the amazing richness of 10-bit depth and 4:2:2 colour sampling, for far greater flexibility in image grading, post-processing and compositing.
All-Intra encoding available
As well as Long GOP, internal All-Intra encoding is now provided. This encodes every frame independently at bitrates up to 600Mbps, to capture complex motion more accurately, and allow more efficient editing workflows.
16-bit RAW SDI output
For demanding post-production workflows, 16-bit RAW output is available via SDI connection to compatible external recorders while XAVC-I files are simultaneously captured in-camera. RAW video output is 4096×2160 or 3840×2160 data from the image sensor with a choice of 59.94 / 50 / 29.97 / 25 / 24 / 23.98 frame rates
Dual CFexpress Type A-compatible media slots
Dual media slots support CFexpress Type A cards13, along with conventional SDXC UHS-I and UHS-II cards, for fast buffer clearance and data management. Simultaneous, relay, interval and proxy modes are supported.
Camera body
Lightweight, modular and robust
Despite its amazingly light 0.89kg body, the Sony FX6 is a tough camera.
Grab and shoot mobility
Ideal for low angle shooting, the smart handle is part of the FX6’s modular design. It’s easy to reconfigure for any application, including mounting in a gimbal, drone, or underwater housing.
Remarkable smart grip and smart handle
Sony’s ergonomic Smart Grip and Smart Handle feature easy one-button adjustment. With zoom, record, and assignable control buttons, as well as a dial suitable for iris control, you can comfortably operate for hours.
Built-in electronic Variable ND Filter
The FX6 features Sony’s unique built-in electronic Variable Neutral Density (ND) filter.
Unlike conventional optical ND Filters, the electronic ND Filter on the FX6 can be controlled from 1/4ND to 1/128ND linearly, or set to auto.
Ideal in changeable environments, there’s no need to change filters as lighting conditions change or to maintain your depth of field.
Professional connectivity
A wide range of professional interfaces is available including 12G-SDI and HDMI outputs, a remote interface, TC connectors for multi-camera sync, and SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps (USB 3.2) to support fluid data workflows.
Focus
Fast Hybrid AF for accuracy and tenacity
The wide-area AF uses intelligent tracking and on-sensor phase-detection for tenacious subject tracking across almost the entire frame.
The hybrid AF system delivers precise focusing even when shooting at shallow depths of field and at 120p high frame rates in 4K (QFHD).
Real-time Eye AF and Face Detection supported
Real-time Eye AF and Face Detection ensure accurate, stable focus acquisition for interviews, events, and anywhere where precise focus on people is essential.
Sophisticated real-time processing realises pinpoint eye focus even when subjects are looking down or up at steep angles, allowing the operator to concentrate fully on composing the best shot.
Powerful focus control for solo shooters
With AF Transition Speed selectable over 7 levels, and AF Subject Shift Sensitivity over 5 levels, you can better convey your creative intentions when switching subjects or, for example, rack focusing.
Lens-ring AF subject selection
When the AF Assist function is ON, rotating the focus ring instantly switches from autofocus to manual focus so that a different subject can be quickly selected.
Autofocus operation resumes as soon as the user stops rotating the lens focus ring.
4K 120fps with every frame in focus
High Frame Rate shots can turn everyday action into a visual feast of elegant movement.
The FX6 captures up to 120 frames per second (fps) at the 4K (QFHD) resolution.
Slow and Quick (S&Q) modes give you full control over the captured frame rate from 1 to 120fps, allowing precise motion narratives, and up to a beautiful 5x Super Slow Motion (24fps output).
Auto focus area/position
For auto focus, you can set the target area among Flexible Spot, Zone, Wide and change the position of the target area quickly during shooting by simply touching the LCD monitor.
Audio
Support for four-channel audio input and recording
Four-channel audio input allows simultaneous capture of external microphones and the built-in microphone.
UWP wireless microphones or XLR audio adaptors such as the XLR-K3M can also be used with the MI Shoe.
Dual XLR inputs and enhanced audio capability
The handle of the FX6 has two independent audio inputs, easy-access XLR connectors to connect external professional microphones.
UWP series wireless microphones may also be connected via the MI Shoe.

FAQ
Main features of the camcorder
The FS5 series features a compact and lightweight body suitable for professional video shooting. It is equipped with an FF sensor that provides high video expressiveness and the latest Fast Hybrid Auto Focus simplifying a process that was previously a challenge.
Differences from the FX9
The FS5 series offers differences in the video that can be shot, and in the expandability and usability of the camera.
FX6
- The FF 4K sensor provides improved sensitivity performance and enables shooting in 4K 120 FPS.
- The light and compact weight of the body enables operation in a wide range of styles, from hand-held to drone shooting.
FX9
- The FF 6K sensor enables high-quality 4K recording with improved perceived resolution and noise feeling by oversampling from 6K. The FX9 produces 4K resolution even in S35 mode, which enables 4K production using PL lenses that expand the range of video expression and compact zoom lenses that enable longer focal distances. The camera also supports Dual Base ISO.
- By using the supplied arm, you can operate in a shoulder style that enables stable shooting for extended periods (the FX6 does not have a compatible arm).
- You can attach the XDCA-FX9 extension unit which provides greater expandability and is compatible with a variety of applications including broadcast stations.
- 4K 120 FPS output by RAW output is also scheduled to be supported in the future.
To get the most out of the high-sensitivity sensor performance, the base sensitivity setting on the camcorder can be changed to extend the ISO upper limit to 409600(*1) for shooting in dark locations (The ISO upper limit for the FS5II is 32000(*2).
Additionally, the base sensitivity during S-Log3 shooting is fixed to ISO2000 for the FS5II, and you can select either a standard base sensitivity of ISO800 or high sensitivity of ISO12800 for dark environments. This effectively expands the shooting range.
Moreover, a wide latitude of 15+ stops enables video recording in environments with a wide range of light levels while suppressing blown-out highlights and blocked up shadows. The high-sensitivity full-size sensor, together with the camcorders ease of mobility, enables high-quality video production in any shooting environment.
*1 When Shooting Mode is set to Custom
*2 When Picture Profile is set to Standard
The Active Mode SteadyShot is available with the following E-Mount lenses:
- SEL18200 (E 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS)
- SELP18200 (E PZ 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS)
Note: Active Mode SteadyShot is only available for Movie recording.
However, the effect differs according to the focal length. As is typical with zoom lenses, the effect is more noticeable when shooting with wide-angle than it is on the telephoto end.
