Shooting with Cooke AP3

What are the Cooke AP3s?

The Cooke AP3 lenses were designed with a clear vision: to bring Cooke’s anamorphic heritage into a compact and modern format, while balancing an anamorphic character.

The result is an image with depth, dimension, and a recognisable ‘look’, without compromising on consistency across focal lengths or solid performance, even at wide-open aperture (T2.4).

Cooke Look

The Cooke AP3s deliver the classic Cooke Look, combining the best of anamorphic: natural skin tones, a smooth highlight roll-off, and an organic sense of depth that adds volume to the scene.

They maintain structure and sharpness in the centre where it is needed, while allowing the edges and highlights to breathe with a more expressive character.

The result is a “defined” image, but not “clinical”.

Anamorphic bokehs and flares

The fall-off is smooth and gradual, with harmonious transitions between planes that provide genuine dimension. Out-of-focus elements become more painterly, drawing the eye without upstaging the subject.

The flares are anamorphic and organic: they do not feel like a ‘manufactured’ effect, but rather a natural response to light that integrates seamlessly into the scene. They remain consistent across the three focal lengths, adding character without saturating the image.

Focus and transitions

The AP3s stand out for the continuity of their focus transitions: the shift from sharpness to bokeh feels fluid.

The breathing can become a creative tool—a subtle gesture that accompanies the focus pull—while the distortion retains that anamorphic hallmark without becoming distracting or ‘breaking’ the scene.

Designed for shooting

They are lightweight and compact, sharing matching mechanics across focal lengths to speed up lens changes (aligned focus and iris rings), and offer very versatile close-focus performance for shooting: 0.5m (35mm), 0.6m (50mm), and 0.9m (85mm).

Cooke AP3 interchangeable mounts

Cooke AP3 lenses feature a native E-mount, but RF, L, and M mounts are also available.

Thanks to this variety of mounts, the AP3s can be used with high-end digital cinema cameras such as the Arri Alexa 35, as well as cameras for tighter-budget productions like the Sony FX3; combined with the fact they are very small and lightweight, this makes them ideal for working in confined spaces and with accessories such as the DJI Ronin 4D.

What are the differences between Cooke AP3 and Cooke SP3 lenses?

  • Anamorphic vs. Spherical Look: The primary difference lies in their optical nature. Whilst the SP3s are spherical lenses based on the legendary Speed Panchros, the AP3s are pure anamorphic lenses (1.5x). This means that with the AP3s, you will get the characteristic oval bokeh, organic horizontal flares, and a sense of cinematic depth that the SP3 spherical lenses cannot replicate.
  • Squeeze factor: The Cooke AP3s offer a 1.5x factor. This ratio is ideal for modern 16:9 or 3:2 sensors, allowing you to achieve a widescreen aspect ratio without losing excessive resolution during the crop.
  • Design and weight: Both ranges are surprisingly small for their class. However, the AP3s are slightly larger than their spherical siblings to house the anamorphic elements, whilst maintaining a balanced weight (between 1.2kg and 1.4kg); this makes them perfect for gimbals and handheld shooting where using high-end anamorphic lenses was previously unthinkable.
  • Colour consistency: Despite their differences, both series are designed to work together. Both sets maintain the unmistakable ‘Cooke Look’.

Which one to choose?

Choose the Cooke SP3s if you are looking for a classic, natural vintage look and high agility on small sets.
Opt for Cooke AP3 hire when you need the epic scale and texture of the anamorphic format without sacrificing the versatility of a compact mirrorless rig.
