Sensor Canon EOS C400

6K Full-Frame cinema camera

The Canon EOS C400’s sensor is a 6K Full Frame BSI (back-illuminated) CMOS—one of its standout features—designed to deliver exceptional performance for cinema, live broadcasting, and virtual production.

This sensor maximises light sensitivity, delivering organic colour reproduction and a dynamic range of 16 stops—ideal for capturing detail in both shadows and highlights under challenging lighting conditions.

It features a triple-base ISO system (800/3200/12800), which optimises the signal-to-noise ratio across different sensitivity levels, ensuring clean images even in low-light environments.

The sensor has approximately 19.05 effective megapixels for 6K and 4K recording.

Its back-illuminated (BSI) design enhances light capture, reducing noise and boosting quality in high-resolution recordings.

Lenses for C400

Although the Canon EOS C400’s native mount is RF, adapters for PL and EF mounts are available, enabling the use of a wide range of lenses, such as Cooke SP3 or Zeiss Nano Prime full-frame primes, as well as full-frame zoom lenses like those in the Fujinon MK E series.

Triple Base ISO

The Canon EOS C400’s triple base ISO system, with values of 800, 3200, and 12800, optimises the signal-to-noise ratio across various lighting conditions, ensuring exceptional image quality.

This enables the camera to efficiently adapt to a wide range of shooting scenarios, from well-lit environments to low-light conditions, while maintaining minimal noise and accurate colour reproduction.

Each base ISO value (800/3200/12800) is calibrated to deliver the optimal balance between sensitivity and image quality, leveraging the back-illuminated design of the 6K Full Frame BSI sensor.

Auto Focus

The Canon EOS C400’s autofocus system, known as “Dual Pixel CMOS AF II” with “EOS iTR AF X,” provides fast, precise, and reliable autofocus across the entire sensor.

The “EOS iTR AF X” (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) enhances automatic tracking by precisely recognising and following faces, eyes, heads, bodies, and even animals, dynamically adapting to the subject’s movements. This system is customisable, allowing adjustments such as the “face-only” mode to prioritise human faces, making it ideal for interviews, documentaries, or narrative productions.

Stabilisation and automatic tracking

The Canon EOS C400’s 5-axis image stabilisation combines electronic image stabilisation (EIS) with the optical image stabilisation (OIS) of compatible RF lenses, delivering remarkably smooth and stable cinematic recordings.

This system compensates for five types of camera movement: yaw, pitch, roll, and horizontal and vertical shifts.

When using lenses without optical stabilisation, the camera employs 5-axis digital stabilisation, which applies a slight crop to the image in order to digitally shift it and counteract movements detected by the camera’s gyroscopic sensors.

RAW recording

The Canon EOS C400 offers advanced recording capabilities in 12-bit Cinema RAW Light, a format designed to maximise flexibility in post-production by capturing a large amount of image data with high fidelity.

This format is available in three modes: LT (Light), ST (Standard), and HQ (High Quality), allowing filmmakers to choose the ideal balance between image quality and file size according to the needs of their project.

RAW Light recording supports resolutions of up to 6K at 60 fps and 4K at 120 fps, delivering exceptional quality for cinematic projects, virtual productions, or high dynamic range (HDR) content.

The Cinema RAW Light format takes full advantage of the camera’s 6K BSI Full Frame sensor, which, combined with its 16 stops of dynamic range, captures rich detail in both shadows and highlights—ideal for intensive colour grading and exposure adjustments in post-production.

Additionally, the EOS C400 enables direct playback of RAW files within the camera with digital lens correction applied, making on-set review more convenient.

HDR Support

The Canon EOS C400 is compatible with multiple HDR formats such as:

  • Canon Log 2 and Canon Log 3: These logarithmic profiles maximise dynamic range, preserving detail in both the darkest and brightest areas for greater flexibility in colour grading during post-production.
Canon Log 2 offers the widest dynamic range, ideal for high-end cinematic projects, while Canon Log 3 is more versatile for faster workflows.
  • PQ and HLG: These HDR formats are optimised for live broadcasts and streaming platforms.
PQ offers accurate high-contrast representation for HDR displays, while HLG is ideal for live broadcasts, as it is compatible with both HDR and SDR screens.
